This qualification forms part of the QA First Aid suite of qualifications. The qualification and learning
outcomes are based on the recommendations of:
• The Resuscitation Council (UK)
• A distinguished panel of experts in emergency medical care
This qualification should enable Learners who operate in clinical practice environments to attain
the practical competencies needed to provide basic life support (BLS) and automated external
defibrillation to a casualty.
This qualification specification provides information for Centres and Learners about the delivery of
the Qualsafe Level 3 Award in Adult Basic Life Support in Clinical Practice (RQF) and includes the unit
information, assessment methods and quality assurance arrangements.
Objective
The objective of the qualification is to benefit Learners by preparing them to safely use an AED
(defibrillator) and perform basic life support interventions in a clinical practice environment.
Intended audience
This qualification is intended for everyone who works in a clinical practice environment including
administration and support staff. The Learner does not need to be a clinician. Examples of clinical
practice environments include: addiction services, aesthetics clinics, community health centres,
dental care, mental health services, nursing and care homes, pharmacies, physiotherapy, podiatry,
primary care/GP services, sexual health and sports medicine. This qualification is designed to assist
clinical practices in meeting the requirements of the Resuscitation Council UK Quality Standards in
relation to basic life support training.
Note: Whilst achievement of this qualification confirms Learners have met the course requirements,
this does not imply a ‘license to practice’. The scope of practice for each Learner will be determined by
the organisation responsible for the governance of their clinical practice environment.
