Phew!
This new business start up is tough going….
No sooner had we hit the pavement than we started to pull in business. Immediately, a five week contract, with a view to more.
Then advertising, business cards, flyers, web design, money to spend on training aids, hotels to book, CV’s to browse, premises to find, courses to develop….. It’s more work than you think.
Whilst initial interest is good it is converting leads into sales that isn’t the easiest task. Lots of people are still using their old ‘trainer’!
Just so you know the difference. At HDP we undertake research into your business and provide an industry specific education course experience. We treat our clients according to their need, not selling a generic qualification to hairdressers and engineering firms alike. You may satisfy the regulations, but is that best for your business? The news here is that it won’t cost you any more with HDP than your current ‘trainer’.
Where do you want your business to be? Where are you going? What do you want? If your solutions provider isn’t asking these questions, you should be asking Why?
We will also recommend other appropriate education for you or your staff group, not just based on what we can supply. If there is a better path, we will advise you on it. That’s something we haven’t found anywhere else yet.
Make sure you get the bang for your buck! Get the Best, don’t settle for less. HDP Education Solutions is your One Stop Shop.
What will it take to make you learn First Aid skills?
Are we getting the message?
Despite extensive media and press campaigns it seems that we still aren’t getting it. I learned CPR and resuscitation skills whilst at school for my Royal Life Saving Society Bronze and Pool Bronze Medallions, and as a Red Cross Cadet. Following this came training in the Forces and Civil Service. After this I went to work for the Ambulance Service. I honestly don’t think I ever had need of these skills until that point.
Whilst at work, the week before joining the Ambulance Service, my father passed away some forty miles away from my workplace. In the rather lengthy time that it took for an Ambulance to arrive, my mother and her brother battled to perform CPR on him under the capable and calm direction of the emergency operator. They had little idea of these skills before this incident, and any knowledge was rusty. Of course, although he couldn’t be saved as it was an Abdominal Aortic Aneurysm, they had the comfort of knowing that they had tried.
The point for me, looking back, is that there is no excuse for not having these skills. People associate having to pay large amounts of money for First Aid Training, and this need not be the case. You do not have to get a full certificate, there are other options. See our website for some ideas.
In the end, Sue Killen of St John Ambulance says, “there is no excuse for not knowing exactly how to save someone’s life.”
- “It’s devastating to find that over half of parents wouldn’t have the first aid confidence to save their own child’s life.
- “And it’s not just parents. Over 40% of people admit that it would take something as severe as the death of a loved one to make them learn first aid.”
Powerful words. And true. Very true. Please get the message!
Paramedic Assaulted…. Where does it end?
Working for the Emergency and Essential User Services carries with it a certain amount of give and take.
It is accepted, for instance, that people are more likely to complain than they are to say thank you officially. There is also a certain amount of abuse, accepted as the norm, due to pain, emotion, alcohol, drugs, or plain old rudeness. You may say that the staff shouldn’t have to accept this. I would agree, but they do, and continue to provide an exceptional service in the face of growing economic instability in their jobs.
Anything above these levels of abuse is clearly not acceptable. Violence is NEVER acceptable.
NWAS, the North West Ambulance Service has issued a Press Release concerning a Paramedic who has been assaulted suffering a fractured skull and extensive bruising. We extend our full best wishes for a speedy recovery.
I hope that the perpetrator is held fully responsible and subjected to the full extent of the Law.
Please, say a firm NO to Abuse and Violence to anyone, not least the Emergency Services.
Make Sure Your Organisation is getting it Right! Say ‘No’ to e-Learning!
A Lincolnshire Care Home group was using a First Aid e-learning package consisting of 20 – 40 questions to certify it’s staff.
Clearly this is not sufficient, as proved by the ‘Qualified Nurse’ on duty who confused a choking patient as having a stroke, and still continued to feed them their next course at dinner!
Sometimes it takes an extreme example to educate people, and I wish this were just a theoretical example. In my honest opinion, the use of e-Learning does not, and never can replace face to face education programmes, no matter how many shiny videos and animated slides they have.
East Midlands Ambulance catching up….
The BBC has reported that East Midlands Ambulance Service are finally going to follow their West Midlands counterparts by utilising vehicle signage to advise on the appropriate use of 999 for Medical Emergencies.

Meanwhile In Australia…. Survival rates drop
Following on from the Danish report we posted this morning, it seems that Australia is suffering a drop in survival numbers following Cardiac Arrests.
Makes for depressing reading.
Don’t let the UK follow suit.
Denmark leading the way in CPR Education
Denmark’s Cardiac Arrest Survival Rates triple after CPR advertising push
This story is worth a browse. The Danish Government handed out kits and learning materials in 2005 to ensure that bystanders would know what to do in the case of an emergency.
Accordingly, the number of cardiac arrest victims who received “bystander” CPR — from someone other than a health professional — more than doubled, from 22% in 2001 to 45% in 2010.
In the same time period, the percentage of cardiac arrest victims who arrived at a hospital alive increased from 8% to 22%.
The percentage of patients alive after 30 days tripled, growing from 3.5% to 11%. The percentage of patients alive after one year also more than tripled, from 3% in 2001 to 10% in 2010.
Impressive. The chances of it happening here in the current climate are slim, but you can learn by attending one of our courses, or by hosting a Save-A-Life Event.
